How this calculator works
The arithmetic is deliberately simple and checkable: published dollars per watt multiplied by system watts, before incentives.
The calculator uses Berkeley Lab's national 2024 distribution for host-owned, stand-alone residential installations: about $3.00/W at the 20th percentile, $4.00/W at the median, and $5.20/W at the 80th percentile. It multiplies those points by the selected system watts. The output remains historical national context and excludes paired storage, third-party ownership, and self-installs.

Why the result is before incentives
Berkeley Lab publishes this distribution before incentives. Keeping incentives out of the multiplication avoids assuming that a specific homeowner qualifies for a tax credit, rebate, or utility program.
The distribution includes both cash and loan-financed purchases, so it must not be described as a cash-price range. When comparing a financed proposal, separately request the cash price, amount financed, APR, finance charge, payment schedule, total of payments, and an itemization of any price difference.
How to use the result without turning it into a verdict
Calculate the proposal's solar-only price per watt from comparable pre-incentive price and DC system watts. If a battery is included without an itemized price, the solar-only figure cannot be compared with this source.
A result inside or outside a historical national distribution does not establish value. Ask what equipment, roof work, electrical work, permitting, financing, warranties, or local conditions explain the difference and compare several written proposals on the same basis.

Don't let expired incentive math inflate the estimate
IRS guidance says the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The calculator therefore does not subtract it or any other incentive.
State, local, and utility programs follow separate rules. Verify each program with the responsible agency or utility and obtain qualified tax advice before counting it in a purchase decision.
